house, the first ladies really have not spent much time. we have an example with michelle obama, she was not familiar with the white house, where as laura bush was familiar coming in during the george h.w. bush presidency. tell us a little bit about michelle obama's transition in and how she prepared for it. >> michelle obama is a serious student, but i don't think there is any way one can be prepared in a sense to really know what is going to be like. her husband had been a u.s. senator for a few years, but she and the girls had stayed in chicago where her whole family and support work. the bush people were incredibly helpful and generous about what the office was like and the structure and all that. the bushes were as well, personally, when the obama is visited. but i have to say there's just no substitute for being there. mrs. obama and the family were first at the adams hotel and then the blair house and into the white house for coffee, as is the tradition on inauguration morning. and everyone went off to the inauguration, and then what the white house residence staff does is jus

yesterday as first lady michelle obama att d attended a funeral of a 15-year-old teen shot in chicago. her mother, will be one of 23 people directly affected by gun violence who will be attending the state of the union as invited guests of house democrats. the representatives are using the bright spotlight to bring attention to gun control measures being considered by congress. as a reminder and for the president these speeches, his most visible platform to influence the debate he hope toss accomplish in the second term. it feels to me like the one thing beyond the ordinary mundane, continuing to get out of the recession, is this gun violence question and this idea of using this as a moment to put pressure on it. whether or not they stand for immigration with 23 gun victim, you know, survivor family members in the room, it's going to be hard not to stand on some sort of gun control. >> it goes to what victoria said, who is the audience? who is the president trying to make the statement to? if he's trying to get public support on his side, he has it. now, the funny thing is they actually do

michelle obama will be the parents of hadiya pendleton, the young woman from the obama's neighborhood in chicago, shot and killed a week after she performed at the president's inauguration in washington. the honor comes as chicago police announce the arrest of pendleton's alleged shooters. they are 18-year-old michael ward, on the left, and 20-year-old kenneth williams. pendleton's cousin spoke by phone to anderson cooper last night. >> on behalf of my family, we are elated to know that there is one person or two now off the streets that could very well cause harm to my neighbor, another relative, or anyone in the world. we're excited to know that the police, the chicago police department worked diligently. however, there is no level of comfort. not long-term comfort. you know, we are still miserable. miserable would only be the term to really acknowledge the feelings of the parents and the family. >> chicago police say the men fired at pendleton by mistake as they were going after rival gang members instead. all right that's a fifth-floor problem... ok. not in my house! ha ha ha! ha
